Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What Is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) refers to a brain disorder that affects your attention span and behavior control. It is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder in children and it also affects teens and adults. In terms of gender, boys are more likely to have it than girls. The signs usually appear during a child's early school years, when they start having trouble paying attention.

ADHD can neither be prevented nor cured. However, spotting ADHD early can help a child or adult manage their symptoms.

FAQs about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

If your child recently developed symptoms of ADHD or was diagnosed with this condition, you probably have many questions. We have listed some of the most frequently asked questions, along with answers from some of our best pediatricians in Fresno and Clovis.

  • ADHD Symptoms

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a child with ADHD often shows some of the following symptoms:

    Difficulties with attention:

    • trouble paying attention
    • inattention to details and makes careless mistakes
    • easily distracted
    • losing things such as school supplies
    • forgetting to turn in homework
    • trouble finishing classwork and homework
    • trouble listening
    • trouble following multiple adult commands
    • difficulty playing quietly

    Hyperactivity:

    • fidgeting
    • inability to stay seated
    • running or climbing excessively
    • always "on the go"

    Impulsivity:

    • talks too much and interrupts or intrudes on others
    • blurts out answers
    • impatience

  • How common is ADHD?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, ADHD affects an estimated 3 to 5 percent of preschool and school-age children. Thus, it is likely that at least one child in a class of 25-30 will be suffering from this condition. Childhood ADHD often lasts into adulthood. According to several recent studies, 30% to 65 percent of children with ADHD remain symptomatic until they are adults.

  • What causes ADHD?

There is no clear cause of ADHD. Many factors may increase a child's chances of having the disorder, including gender, family history, prenatal risks, environmental toxins, and physical differences in the brain.

  • What are the types of treatment for ADHD?

Treatment is available, and it's effective. Your child must be evaluated by a mental health professional or their primary care doctor. Children with ADHD can learn to control their behavior and pay attention to the right things with the right treatment. By providing them with the right kind of care, they will grow, learn, and feel better about themselves. The following treatments are available for children with ADHD:

    Medications.

ADHD medication is beneficial for most children. IT does not cure ADHD. However, it helps in managing the symptoms.

Medication falls into two main categories: stimulant medications and non-stimulant medications. A variety of stimulants are available, including methylphenidate and amphetamine salts. The non-stimulants include atomoxetine, guanfacine, and clonidine.

To decide on the best medication for your child, discuss the benefits and possible side effects with their doctor. Doctors should continue monitoring your child for side effects and improvement. Almost all children who benefit from ADHD medications will continue to benefit from them into adulthood. Many adults with ADHD find that medication can be helpful as well.

    Therapy and Other Support:

Psychiatrists or other mental health professionals can provide help to children with ADHD. Parents need to have counseling that helps them provide structure and reinforce positive behavior. A child's self-esteem can also be improved by individual therapy. An effective therapist can help a child identify their strengths and improve them. Additionally, therapy can also help children with ADHD deal with daily problems, learn to be more attentive, and control their aggression. Treatment options include behavioral therapy, talk therapy, social skills training, and family support groups.
